BUSTERS PLACE
ROCKED AS USUAL
this month!  Probably because the weather had turned cooler, most of the guys decided to sample some of Steve's fine chili!  And fine it was, too!
"Delicious" was the unanimous opinion!

The folks at Buster's Place always treat our Vets so well, no wonder it's one of their favorite spots!

A   SOLDIER DIED  TODAY

He was getting old and paunchy
and his hair was falling fast,
and he sat around the Legion,
telling stories of the past.

Of a war that he once fought in
and the deeds that he had done,
In his exploits with his buddies;
they were heroes, every one.

And 'tho sometimes to his neighbors
his tales became a joke,
all his buddies listened quietly
for they knew where of he spoke.

But we'll hear his tales no longer,
for ol' Bob has passed away,
and the world's a little poorer
for a Soldier died today.

He won't be mourned by many,
just his children and his wife.
for he lived an ordinary,
very quiet sort of life.

He held a job and raised a family,
going quietly on his way;
and the world won't note his passing,
'tho a Soldier died today.

When politicians leave this earth,
their bodies lie in state,
while thousands note their passing,
and proclaim that they were great.

Papers tell of their life stories
from the time that they were young,
but the passing of a Soldier
goes unnoticed, and unsung.

Is the greatest contribution
to the welfare of our land,
some jerk who breaks his promise
and cons his fellow man?

Or the ordinary fellow
who in times of war and strife,
goes off to serve his country
and offers up his life?

The politician's stipend
and the style in which he lives,
are often disproportionate,
to the service that he gives.

While the ordinary Soldier,
who offered up his all,
is paid off with a medal
and perhaps a pension, small.

It is not the politicians
with their compromise and ploys,
who won for us the freedom
that our country now enjoys.

Should you find yourself in danger,
with your enemies at hand,
would you really want some cop-out,
with his ever waffling stand?

Or would you want a Soldier--
his home, his country, his kin,
just a common Soldier,
who would fight until the end.

He was just a common Soldier,
and his ranks are growing thin,
but his presence should remind us
we may need his like again.

For when countries are in conflict,
we find the Soldier's part,
is to clean up all the troubles
that the politicians start.

If we cannot do him honour
while he's here to hear the praise,
then at least let's give him homage
at the ending of his days.

Perhaps just a simple headline
in the paper that might say:

"OUR COUNTRY IS IN   MOURNING,
A SOLDIER DIED TODAY"

A VISIT FROM VIETNAM/LEGACY VETS MC !!

The Tennessee State Veterans Home had a wonderful visit from the VIETNAM/LEGACY VETS MC on Dec. 20th!

These "Super Santas" came riding up to visit the Veterans bearing not just gifts but their CHECKBOOKS!

They gave a healthy donation to the Activity Dept. of TSVH ... then  surprised Rich Peoples, VetsNiteOut Founder, with a check as well!!!!

They told him they appreciated what he was doing with VetsNiteOut and wanted to help him keep up the good work!

What a welcome surprise!!!!

Thank you soooo much Vietnam/Legacy Vets MC!!!

(See....there really IS a Santa Claus!!!)

A Friendly Reminder:

Please come join our Veterans whenever you
can ... it means a lot!

During the Holidays the Nursing Homes generally
get lots of attention ... but please remember that the Residents are there all year long.

Whenever you can, drop
in and say hi.  Just a few minutes spent talking with someone can mean a whole
lot!

*DUGGERS TRIP CANCELLED!

Had to cancel the Duggers trip... not so much because of the weather as due to
the fact that the bus was in the shop...
the wheelchair lift was messed up!

The guys were sure disappointed, too....they LOVE going to Duggers!

As one Vet put it, "Duggers is about one
of the finest places I've ever been to, to just go out and have a good time."

Well said!

Hopefully next time!

A Holiday Blessing...

We received the nicest phone call
the other day!

The daughter of one of our VetsNiteOut participants called to say that she was donating the balance of her recently-departed father's personal spending account to VetsNiteOut!

She said both of them had had
such a good time on the VetsNite
Out trips she had attended with
him that she felt moved to make
this contribution to "further the cause".

She also said that she would be keeping an eye on the VetsNiteOut website/calendar and trying to join us on future trips!

How very nice...and appreciated!
Thank you!

WILLIE'S TRIP A HUGE SUCCESS ....
AS USUAL!
Tina, the Bartender, made the guys a
fine spaghetti dinner...and even had Christmas cards for them...with their names on them ... and even a candy
cane!

Willie's always tries to make our
Veterans feel special!!

One of Willie's "regulars" came in an bought a round of beer for the guys!

Even the "mystery lady" who comes
over from Nissan saw the bus and
came in to wish everyone a Merry Christmas!

It was pretty cold outside...but it's a
good guess that everyone who was at Willie's that day felt pretty warm inside!

VFW Ladies Auxillary
Sure enough, we didn't make it to the VFW on the 18th, but the
Ladies Auxillary Post 8422 came
to the Tennessee State Veterans Home the following week and brought 140 beautiful, hand-madeblankets in everybright color imaginable...one for EVERY single Resident!! It was truly a sight to behold as they were just gorgeous!! They also said they missed us last week...and for us to be sure to
come in January! Thanks so much! We'll be there!

We actually made it to the Handlebar before the end of December!  Woohoo!

And we had a fantastic time, too!  The Veterans ate heartily of the Handlebar's fabulous food, and washed it down with beer!
What a way to end the year!
